A Colorful Case of the Blues!

To my amazement, this summer my hydrangeas bloomed with full force. I wasn’t feeling very confident since I had just planted them at the end of last fall, but they looked healthy and the flowers had the most intense blue.

There is something to be said about Hydrangea blue: it is not uniform but it runs the gamut from the pale to the almost purple. I love the medium blue and find it very inviting. Apparently, Designer Benjamin Noriega Ortiz is also a fan. The Mondrian Hotel in NYC, which he designed, makes use of that beautiful blue to create a magic atmosphere.

If you happen to be planning a trip to the Big Apple, make sure you sneak in for a drink and soak in this magic blue that does wonders for the hotel’s ambiance.  Not only you will be surrounded by this sophisticated shade of blue; you will marvel at every small detail of its décor.

I especially thought the bookcase display at the café was quite clever with its books grouped by the color of their jackets. This is something one can do at home and reap the rewards of a carefully staged bookcase.

Another unusual feature was the use of many chandeliers to make a gigantic light fixture that sparkles above the bar area.

At Isola Trattoria and Crudo Bar, their main eatery, suspended glass shelves make the perfect display venue for glasses and jars. This is another wonderful idea that we can translate to home décor.

Happy Designing!

“Speak” with the Perfect Accent

Maybe you can’t have that British or Brazilian accent you’ve always wanted, but that doesn’t mean you can’t create one of your own. You can speak in a green or blue accent, or maybe a tangerine or red accent is your favorite.

(No silly, we’re not talking about actual words here!) We’re talking about speaking with décor. Adding an accent color can speak volumes when it comes to interior design.

If you like color but don’t want your entire space to be too bold, you can opt for neutral shades and choose accents in your favorite colors. It’s the perfect way to liven up your space and you can easily switch the accent color for different seasons. Take a look at our accent inspirations below!

Fourth of July DIY

Trying to think of a patriotic party treat to bring to the neighbor’s cookout? Want to get the kids involved in representing the red, white, and blue? These simple yet fun DIY projects are sure to get everyone in the American spirit this Fourth of July!

Patriotic Paper Lanterns

small-paper-lanterns-9

Supplies You will need to make the Paper Lanterns:

-Cardstock in Red, White and Blue

-A ruler

-Scissors

-Star punch or Star Stickers

-A pencil

-Glue Sticks

-Festive Ribbon

-Stapler

Step One: Fold your cardstock in Half Lengthwise.  Then take your ruler and draw lines from the fold, leaving an inch from the end of your line and the edge.  Leave about .75 inch on each side.

Step 2: Have the kids cut on the line, stopping when the line ends, not through to the edge.  (This is great cutting practice)

Step 3:  Unfold your paper and then with the folded bumps on the outside, turn inward and attach at the top and bottom.  Then staple both the top and bottom a couple of times.

Step 4: DECORATE! Add festive stickers, star cutouts, ribbon, etc.

Step 5: Using ribbon or string, hang the lanterns for festive décor either inside your home or outside.

Bring the Beach to Baby

Are you a lover of the beach and ocean? It may be hard to take your new baby to the beach, so have it waiting for them at home with a themed nursery! Whether you want to go bright with beachy or sophisticated with nautical, a nursery theme is a great way to enjoy the space all year round.

For a bright playful look, pair yellow and aqua to bring in the essence of a sunny day on the shore. Mix things up by using multiple patterns that add depth to the color combinations. A few friends from sea life are the perfect way to complete the look.

Fashion Meets Family Room

“Always paint your walls in a color you look good in,” is one of the best pieces of advice when it comes to interior design, and your personal style. If you are contemporary or preppy, your home should reflect that so when you are in your house it feels like a home.

You may like a modern look, but if it isn’t your style you won’t feel just right. To help you to achieve this, we have compared home fashions with clothing and a color palette. Before decorating, a color palette is a smart first step because it allows you to stay within a certain realm. This way you won’t get overwhelmed.
