Meet Patricia: The Brains Behind PoshLiving

Two years ago, I was transplanted from the Westport town of Connecticut to the southern city of Richmond, Virginia.  It all happened quite quickly: one day I was driving on the winding roads of New England and days later I was in a flat with rented furniture facing the exhaust system of the Kona Grill (which happens to be a great restaurant I later found out!). I landed in a new area of Richmond called Short Pump, referred to by many of the old timers as the “wrong zip code” because it’s mostly new development.

Now, after all the hurdles of a new life, I have grown to love this town. People are friendly, polite and hold the door for you and there are huge expanses of fields. On my way to work I have to stop for geese! And the Short Pump area, although not populated by the beautiful buildings of old Richmond, is a marvelous place to live. All this and it’s just one hour and a half from Washington, DC!

A few months later, with a new townhouse to furnish and a puppy to drive me crazy, I landed a great position at PoshLiving.  Although I still feel like Vince Vaughn at Google in the film “The Internship”, I love the idea of working with all these youngsters, full of cool ideas and with a great outlook on life.

There is nothing that I love more than design. From early on I knew that I wanted to be an Interior Designer. I am embracing this opportunity to share with you all things design and help make your lives stylish and pleasant. After all, it is in our homes that we seek refuge and comfort so special attention should be paid to our surroundings.

We are revamping our PoshLiving site to the same standards of our uber great PoshTots.  Our goal is to help you all have beautiful homes and we will shower you with ideas and tips.  There are great plans for a unique, new great gift registry especially for newlyweds. From tabletop and gifts, to the living room and even the nursery, we want to help you live a design-inspired life. Let’s make it a great ride!

A Few Questions for… Kathryn Satterwhite!

Let’s put a face to a name. You may have heard our design consultant’s sweetheart voice over the phone, but it’s time you learn more about Kathryn Satterwhite! This young designer has been a part of the Posh team since April 2012 and is queen of the Pinterest party treats.

Name: Kathryn Satterwhite KS Photo 4 6-14-13 copy

Design background: Nothing formal… I received my B.B.A. in Marketing from the College of William & Mary and minored in Classical Studies where I enjoyed learning about Roman and Greek art and architecture.

Design philosophy: I believe in surrounding yourself with whatever makes you happy. I have an eclectic taste that combines comfort, color and texture. If you combine items that have stories and remind you of past travels, experiences and moments, you can’t go wrong!

Inspirations?  I gain inspiration from traveling around the world. I was able to study abroad in college on Semester at Sea, which allowed me to collect various unique items and learn first-hand about different cultures. Through traveling, I was exposed to unique fabrics, and colors (especially fun lighting fixtures) that greatly influences my design pallet. Also, copious amounts of HGTV and Pinterest help me get inspired day-to-day.

Influences? Everyday I’m influenced by nature and the many unique items we have on PoshTots & PoshLiving. I love working with and learning from such talented designers and artisans who greatly influence by design pallet every day.

Describe your design style: I tend to lean more on things that are whimsical, feminine, soft, light and elegant. I love playing with bolder fabrics that can be statement pieces, which you can use to build your color scheme. I like choosing 2-3 bigger pieces in the room that are in the same bold color pallet and use other more neutral colors to coordinate. I also like the 60-30-10 color rule, which means a room is made up of 60% of a dominate color (walls), 30% of a secondary color (upholstery) and 10% of an accent color (artwork or accent piece).
