Beautiful Bedding with or without the Bumper

In our industry, things change constantly. Colors and patterns that were on trend this season may be very hard to find next season, our artisans are always coming up with gorgeous new pieces, and child safety standards are ever evolving. Over the past few years, baby bedding with bumpers has been a big topic of debate.

The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) filed a petition requesting that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) establish a performance standard for crib bumpers to distinguish between “hazardous pillow-like” and “non-hazardous traditional” styles.  JPMA’s current stance is that “traditional crib bumpers, when used properly, can prevent limb entrapment and head injuries.”

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), there is no evidence that crib bumpers protect against injury, but they do carry a potential risk of suffocation, strangulation, or entrapment because infants lack the motor skills or strength to turn their heads should they roll into something that obstructs their breathing.

We at Posh are supporters of parents. We believe that you will make the right decision for your baby. To help support this important decision, we have recently added many new bedding sets available with our without bumpers. Below are a few new beauties with designs that don’t dull without the bumper!

The trick? If you’re on the fence about using a bumper (or definitely don’t want to), find a bedding set with most of the pizzazz in the crib skirt. This way, you won’t feel like you are being cheated out of the look you want when the bumper is taken away.

Many parents purchase bumpers, but only use them when their baby is around 6-12 months (give or take). Babies around this range have the ability to move away from the bumpers if needed, will be protected from getting their little legs and arms caught, but aren’t quite big enough to climb up on the bumper. You know your baby best and will be able to determine what is right for their stage of mobility.

We, and our talented designers and artisans, make every attempt to progress with the industry. Our promise to you, our PoshParents, is to strive to find new products to fulfill your style cravings and safety concerns. So will it be a two or three piece set for your baby?

Oh My Deer: Designing a Neutral Nursery

So you’re designing a nursery for your baby-to-be, but plan to keep their gender a surprise. Or maybe you want to have kids close in age and need the nursery to work for either a boy or girl. Whatever the reason, don’t feel the need to go bland when designing a gender-neutral nursery; it can be beautiful and exciting!

Don’t be afraid that your baby’s nursery won’t feel personalized because of its neutrality. All it takes is the right inspiration! Since your little one will be a combination of you and your partner, you may want to use some of your common interests to influence your design direction. Whether you are nature lovers, athletes, world travelers, techies, or have a favorite animal, don’t hesitate to incorporate your own love into this oh-so special space.

Our “Oh My Deer” design was inspired by a couple who built a house out in the woods with lots of large windows because they loved to watch the animals as they were meant to be in nature. The nursery focuses on the serenity of deer in their natural habitat, which is enhanced by a calming color scheme. Pulling the design inspiration from something the couple enjoys together gives the room a very personal feel. What interests would you and your partner incorporate?

Many people think they should stray from using too much color if the nursery is gender neutral. We’re here to tell you to find that perfect color and run with it! Going with a very specific and interesting hue helps to keep it unisex. While blue is usually thought to be boy-specific, we went with an elegant lighter shade to keep it in the middle. Grays are a great neutral that work well with an array of colors.

The Grace Crib featured in the design is excluded from our site-wide sale, but is a part of our Young America furniture sale through 1/28.

Kerry Washington’s Wondrous Woodland Nursery

As soon as rumors began circling that the beautiful Kerry Washington was pregnant, our designers were inspired to create the perfect nursery for her little one on the way. Washington secretly married NFL corner back Nnamdi Asomugha back in June and pregnancy rumors surfaced in October. Since she finally debuted her baby bump Sunday night at the Golden Globe Awards, we figured it was time to debut our design.

So how do you create a design for 2013’s Best Dressed Woman (as named by PEOPLE)? We started with an inspiration board based on trends in her impeccable fashion style. Some of our favorite looks are light neutrals with metallic accents and touches of nature, such as floral and leaf prints.

Since the nursery design needed to be gender neutral, these dresses became the perfect inspiration! We decided on a woodland nursery to embrace the beauty of nature and its neutral hues. Adding metallic accents gave the design some sparkly and fun dimension.

Kerry’s taste in home design was also very important in our nursery design as we wanted it to match her style of décor. The pictures above reflect the earth-friendly makeover done on her West Hollywood apartment by Danny Seo in 2009. He catered to her love for eco-friendly design.

From our glimpse inside her home, we learned that she has modern taste and a love for nature. The designs incorporate very neutral basics (furniture, cabinets, and bedspread) with exciting pops of color and pattern throughout. This inspired our use of Poppy as an accent color in the bedding, canvas art, and wallpaper!

When designing a gender neutral nursery, nature can be a wonderful muse because of its simplistic beauty. For an accent, try to choose a color that isn’t always gender specific – orange, green, light blue, silver, gold, brown, etc.

Making His Nursery Masculine

We can all agree that babies are cute as can be, but does that automatically mean a nursery must be cutesy and playful as well? When designing a nursery for a baby boy, many parents struggle between going all out cute or making it masculine.

The cute stuff is easy to find, but getting the perfect masculine look isn’t always as easy. Here are a few tips to help you pick out manly pieces for Mr. Baby-on-the-way:

Choose your wood wisely

If you want to go sleek and sophisticated with your masculine design, darker wood finishes are the way to go. Mahogany, espresso, and even black furniture pieces are the equivalent to a man’s classic suit.

pallet wall diy

Picturing your little man as more of a rugged outdoorsy type? Rustic unfinished woods and natural, glossless pieces will bring the feel of nature into your nursery. Try this incredible DIY to create the paneled accent wall pictured above!

Get rich with color, but play down the patterns

poshtots rugs

Fill your nursery with a sense of strength and power by incorporating deep, richer colors such as brick red, royal blue, emerald green, burgundy, navy blue, forest green, or charcoal gray. Lighter and brighter hues tend to give a cutesy vibe and can often appear feminine.

While fun prints enhance the design of children’s spaces, try to stick with simple patterns. Busy designs can be overpowering in a masculine design. Think of using different patterns the way a shirt and tie go together. Two strong colors and simple patterns can make for interesting design, but too much pattern can clash. Stripes, polka dots, and geometric patterns are easiest and often the best choice. Beware of prints that mix patterns, colors, and throw in random animals/symbols.

Create a strong sense of identity

monogram

So much thought goes into creating the name your son will embrace for the rest of his life. Celebrate his moniker to give him a strong identity from the very start. Whether you paint his name on the wall, hang wooden letters, or personalize his gear, the display will give a sense of strength and character. Avoid script fonts to maintain the masculine vibe.

We hope these little tips help you create the masculine nursery you have always dreamt of for your little man! Need some more tips or design help? Give our design consultants a call 1-866-767-4868

A Modern Punk Nursery for Gwen Stefani

What kind of nursery would Rock Queen Gwen Stefani want for her baby on the way?  A rockin’ one of course! All of the items chosen for the nursery are inspired by Gwen Stefani’s awesome sense of style and punk personality.  From the days when she was “just a girl” singing in No Doubt to her more sophisticated style represented in her fashion line, L.A.M.B. each piece screams, “GWEN!”

gwen stefani nursery design

I always think of Gwen’s bright red lipstick in the 90’s which is why there are so many red accents seen throughout the nursery—specifically in the seat belt chair, dresser with brass handles, and the fabrics for the crib bumper and blanket. Although I have to say, my favorite red accent is the one in the black and white wallpaper which is cleverly called “Pucker Up, Butter Cup.”

The silver chain chandelier acts as a piece of “jewelry” in the room—it’s the finishing touch, just like a necklace can complete an outfit, so can a chandelier.  The houndstooth rug was a no brainer, since Gwen has been seen wearing houndstooth multiple times throughout her career.  As a designer, I knew this nursery had to be bold and edgy for such a modern mommy.

The Princess Palace Guide

Is your little girl a perfect princess? Then it’s time to make her feel like one! We’ve put together a guide to help you design the ultimate princess room.

How to Create the Perfect Palace for your Little Princess:

  1. Make it Pink! Little girls love pink and they’ll look so adorable surrounded by such a soft, feminine color.
  2. Personalize It.  This is her space, so add her name and initials wherever you can, this room is all about HER!
  3. Sparkle and Shine.  What princess doesn’t love a little glamour in her space? Use unique lighting or a gold leaf finish to add sparkle.
  4. Soften the room.  A princess is delicate and needs a soft place to rest her head. Choose luxurious linens for the bed with a soft shaggy raggy area rug to complete the room.
  5. Go Custom.  When everything just seems too “been there, done that” create a truly one-of-a-kind bedroom for your princess with a hand-painted mural and custom built furniture to match.

The Western Vintage Way

Whether you’re decorating a nursery, living room, or the whole house, designing with the Western Vintage way will bring a warm feeling to your space. Mix weathered and vintage looking furnishings with earthy tones, Aztec-inspired patterns, and a touch of western décor to achieve this rising style trend in interior design.

Our designers have put together Western Vintage looks for both you and baby, so you can be at home on the range no matter where you live. Are you a fan of this style or do you think it should stay in the “Old West?”

Western Vintage Living Room from PoshLiving

Add eclectic flare to your home with these Western Vintage inspired favorites from PoshLiving. Using a geometric designed rug with bold bright colors brings visual interest to this living space.

Mixing in soft fabrics with the leather sofa softens the room, while the weathered case pieces make the room feel rustic.  Unique lighting and traditional art are the finishing touches needed to make this room complete.

 Western Vintage Nursery by PoshTots

We adopted this version of the typical kid-inspired cowboy themed room and gave it a little bit of sophistication.

Starting with a palette of neutral earthy shades, subtle hints of the Wild West adorn this nursery. Accents of vintage-inspired furnishings and accessories are just enough to create this eclectic mix.
