Posh Pantone Pick: Koi Designs

Fall is here and we’re feeling inspired! The Pantone Color Report for Fall 2013 has some beautiful selections that have every interior designer and fashion stylist buzzing with ideas. Our favorite Fall color is currently Koi!

Koi, “a decorative orange with dazzling and shimmering qualities, is a statement color that serves as a pick-me-up.” We’ve taken it in both directions: a brighter pop for an exciting gender neutral nursery and a soft serene bedroom for you.

In this gender neutral nursery, Koi takes center stage in bold dots and stripes, while accents with pale aqua and a hint of chocolate make for a chic color story. We selected Benjamin Moore’s Tamarind to be used as an accent color in this room with our hot air balloon wall covering.

As fall approaches, inspiration for the home can be found all around us, especially in nature.  Koi is the focal color for this sophisticated autumn-inspired bedroom. It’s then paired with leaf green and neutral beiges are used as coordinating accent colors to tie the whole room together.  Dark wood pieces and gold light fixtures add elegant contrast to this neutral palette.

A Colorful Case of the Blues!

To my amazement, this summer my hydrangeas bloomed with full force. I wasn’t feeling very confident since I had just planted them at the end of last fall, but they looked healthy and the flowers had the most intense blue.

There is something to be said about Hydrangea blue: it is not uniform but it runs the gamut from the pale to the almost purple. I love the medium blue and find it very inviting. Apparently, Designer Benjamin Noriega Ortiz is also a fan. The Mondrian Hotel in NYC, which he designed, makes use of that beautiful blue to create a magic atmosphere.

If you happen to be planning a trip to the Big Apple, make sure you sneak in for a drink and soak in this magic blue that does wonders for the hotel’s ambiance.  Not only you will be surrounded by this sophisticated shade of blue; you will marvel at every small detail of its décor.

I especially thought the bookcase display at the café was quite clever with its books grouped by the color of their jackets. This is something one can do at home and reap the rewards of a carefully staged bookcase.

Another unusual feature was the use of many chandeliers to make a gigantic light fixture that sparkles above the bar area.

At Isola Trattoria and Crudo Bar, their main eatery, suspended glass shelves make the perfect display venue for glasses and jars. This is another wonderful idea that we can translate to home décor.

Butterfly Home Beauty

This trend just in: butterfly designs are all around us!

From our gardens to Nature Centers, they have invaded our homes in the form of dishes, fabrics, and other accessories. What a beautiful way to make spring linger longer and have summer stay…

I for one could not resist and added two silk embroidered butterfly pillows to my dining room banquette.

Christian Lacroix, the former designer for Dior, directed his talent to creating whimsical designs for the home and showered plates and fabrics with butterflies.

I marveled at the beautiful butterfly kissing my hydrangea trees and vowed to visit the garden center and pick some more butterfly loving plants.

Botanical gardens all over the country are celebrating butterflies by showering visitors with them at their greenhouses.  The beauty and lightness of butterflies bring grace and color into our homes.

During the colder months when grey is all around us, a splash of color can do wonders to uplift our moods. Think of the whimsical patterns of the butterfly fabrics in a throw pillow, a chair or cool art work on the wall.

Meet Patricia: The Brains Behind PoshLiving

Two years ago, I was transplanted from the Westport town of Connecticut to the southern city of Richmond, Virginia.  It all happened quite quickly: one day I was driving on the winding roads of New England and days later I was in a flat with rented furniture facing the exhaust system of the Kona Grill (which happens to be a great restaurant I later found out!). I landed in a new area of Richmond called Short Pump, referred to by many of the old timers as the “wrong zip code” because it’s mostly new development.

Now, after all the hurdles of a new life, I have grown to love this town. People are friendly, polite and hold the door for you and there are huge expanses of fields. On my way to work I have to stop for geese! And the Short Pump area, although not populated by the beautiful buildings of old Richmond, is a marvelous place to live. All this and it’s just one hour and a half from Washington, DC!

A few months later, with a new townhouse to furnish and a puppy to drive me crazy, I landed a great position at PoshLiving.  Although I still feel like Vince Vaughn at Google in the film “The Internship”, I love the idea of working with all these youngsters, full of cool ideas and with a great outlook on life.

“Speak” with the Perfect Accent

Maybe you can’t have that British or Brazilian accent you’ve always wanted, but that doesn’t mean you can’t create one of your own. You can speak in a green or blue accent, or maybe a tangerine or red accent is your favorite.

(No silly, we’re not talking about actual words here!) We’re talking about speaking with décor. Adding an accent color can speak volumes when it comes to interior design.

If you like color but don’t want your entire space to be too bold, you can opt for neutral shades and choose accents in your favorite colors. It’s the perfect way to liven up your space and you can easily switch the accent color for different seasons. Take a look at our accent inspirations below!

A Few Questions for… Kathryn Satterwhite!

Let’s put a face to a name. You may have heard our design consultant’s sweetheart voice over the phone, but it’s time you learn more about Kathryn Satterwhite! This young designer has been a part of the Posh team since April 2012 and is queen of the Pinterest party treats.

Name: Kathryn Satterwhite KS Photo 4 6-14-13 copy

Design background: Nothing formal… I received my B.B.A. in Marketing from the College of William & Mary and minored in Classical Studies where I enjoyed learning about Roman and Greek art and architecture.

Design philosophy: I believe in surrounding yourself with whatever makes you happy. I have an eclectic taste that combines comfort, color and texture. If you combine items that have stories and remind you of past travels, experiences and moments, you can’t go wrong!

Inspirations?  I gain inspiration from traveling around the world. I was able to study abroad in college on Semester at Sea, which allowed me to collect various unique items and learn first-hand about different cultures. Through traveling, I was exposed to unique fabrics, and colors (especially fun lighting fixtures) that greatly influences my design pallet. Also, copious amounts of HGTV and Pinterest help me get inspired day-to-day.

Influences? Everyday I’m influenced by nature and the many unique items we have on PoshTots & PoshLiving. I love working with and learning from such talented designers and artisans who greatly influence by design pallet every day.

Describe your design style: I tend to lean more on things that are whimsical, feminine, soft, light and elegant. I love playing with bolder fabrics that can be statement pieces, which you can use to build your color scheme. I like choosing 2-3 bigger pieces in the room that are in the same bold color pallet and use other more neutral colors to coordinate. I also like the 60-30-10 color rule, which means a room is made up of 60% of a dominate color (walls), 30% of a secondary color (upholstery) and 10% of an accent color (artwork or accent piece).

Favorite book?  There Eyes Were Watching God (Zora Neale Hurston), Beloved (Tony Morrison) The Time Keeper (Mitch Alborn), The Time Traveler’s Wife (Audrey Niffenegger) Gone Girl (Gillian Flynn)

Websites? Buzzfeed.com, Etsy.com, Pinterest.com, and RedDressBoutique.com

On my iPod: New & old Country music including (but not limited to), Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, George Strait, Zac Brown Band, The Band Perry, and Sara Evans. I also love Fun, Mumford & Sons and Eric Hutchinson.

Must-See TV:  Mad Men, Game of Thrones, Modern Family, and House Hunters (regular, international & renovation J).

Favorite quote:Happiness Lies in the Joy of Achievement and the Thrill of Creative Effort”- Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Accessories with a Statement

Some furnishings may be labeled as accessories, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t make a statement! The right lighting in a room should be like eye-catching jewelry that completes an outfit. It artistically draws everything together and a look is too plain without it.

Make the lighting in your home stand out as the focal point of a room with these fabulous new designs offered by PoshLiving.
